Why Champions for Change and why NEW AND WHY NOW?
Across our communities, people deserve to feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. Yet the persistent racial disparities in health, wealth, education, housing, policing, and political power show how far we still are from that dream. These inequities aren’t accidental; they’re rooted in systems designed for some to thrive at the expense of others – systems that also fuel today’s polarization and backlash against justice movements.
Champions for Change (CFC) exists to build power and strengthen our capacity for racial justice and healing here in our SE Michigan communities. By bringing together community builders, helpers, organizers, caregivers – anyone attentive to collective wellbeing – we can learn and practice new ways of leading towards lasting change. Grounded in NEW’s commitment to justice, liberation, and our shared humanity, CFC offers practical approaches to racial co-liberation that support and restore people as we ourselves, our organizations, and our communities. It’s a space to grow into leadership, even if you don’t yet see yourself as a “leader,” to discover strengths and practice new ways of being in community, and to slow down, reflect, and reconnect to purpose.
Through shared practice, deep listening, and relationship-building, Champions are nourished, supported, and equipped for intentional, sustained action. Together, we cultivate the courage, clarity, and collective power needed to disrupt racism and move toward a future where everyone can thrive.

“My experience was “difficultly beautiful”– at the onset of the program this past cycle the country had just elected its next president. That reality paired with the explicit racial equity work ahead of is as a cohort gave my cohort an interesting set of circumstances to deal with in reality. I think the beauty was that the program leaders were extremely sensitive to that and handled us with care while still staying true to the objectives for each session.”
Demetrius Shields,
2024-2025 Cohort

“As leaders in our communities, we came together with a shared purpose: to deepen our understanding, to grow in our ability to advance social and racial justice, equity, and inclusion. We talked, we cried, we listened, we traveled, we drummed, we saw, we learned, and we broke bread together. These experiences—raw, real, and profound—will stay with me forever.”
Kristina Michael,
2024-2025 Cohort

“The most impactful part of the experience was meeting other folks who care about racial justice and being a part of a supportive community. It is encouraging to know there are folks out there who are trying to make a difference.”
Yoshi Babcock,
2024-2025 Cohort

THE CHAMPIONS FOR CHANGE EXPERIENCE
In CFC, you’ll explore how race has shaped your life and perspectives, practice dialogue across lines of identity, and build skills for connection, influence, and collective action. You’ll learn new ways of showing up in community, experience joy and rejuvenation, and bridge the communities you care about with the communities others are tending to.
Sessions are full-day (7-hour) gatherings, held once or twice a month in Ann Arbor and Detroit, with a few virtual sessions. Each day includes storytelling, deep listening, skills practice, and space for joy, play, and shared meals.
You’ll also join smaller affinity groups organized around identities such as race, gender, generation, or role. These groups offer room for honest reflection, shared experience, lowered armor, and deeper connection. Most sessions include both affinity time and full-cohort dialogue so we can build brave, grounded, and authentic conversations together.
The 2026 cohort will welcome up to 26 participants from across Southeast Michigan: community thinkers, builders, helpers, organizers, activists, nonprofit staff, social workers, and others navigating the complexities and possibilities of this moment.
As part of your journey, you will be invited to work toward a personal fundraising goal of $500 – $1,000. These funds will support the cost of our closing retreat in Idlewild, Michigan, with a portion also benefiting a local racial justice organization. Upon joining the cohort, you will receive clear guidance, materials, and support to help you meet this goal.
Through this experience, we will:
- Deepen our understanding of social and racial justice, equity, and inclusion, while gaining practical skills to advance them.
- Strengthen the emotional capacities of courage, resilience, and compassion that sustain long-term justice work.
- Honor and learn from the collective wisdom of the CFC community by uplifting each other’s knowledge and lived experiences.
- Build lasting relationships with justice-focused leaders across Southeast Michigan who share a commitment to racial equity.
- Recognize and challenge unjust policies, practices, and procedures within our spheres of influence.
- Help create the conditions for more BIPOC leaders to thrive and expand their leadership across sectors and industries in Southeast Michigan.

Saturday, February 21 (02/21/26), 9am – 4pm
NEW Center (Ann Arbor)
This session introduces embodiment and courageous dialogue as essential tools for building the capacity to create change without losing ourselves or each other in the process. Participants will learn practices that strengthen awareness, reduce harm, and keep us grounded in our values, even in moments of stress, conflict, or uncertainty. By pairing nervous system regulation with intentional communication, we cultivate the inner and collective resilience required for sustainable, liberatory work.
Sustaining & Strengthening Connections
Saturday, March 7 (03/07/26), 9am – 4pm
TeenHYPE (Detroit)
Building upon our previous session, we’ll deepen our practice of embodiment and interracial dialogue, focusing on how to stay grounded and connected during moments of difficulty or tension. We’ll revisit key concepts and explore what happens when dialogue gets tough or when our bodies become dysregulated. Together, we’ll reflect on the places where we get stuck, and practice ways to stay present, curious, and connected. Through reflection and guided practice, you’ll gain tools for navigating challenging conversations and cultivating relationships that both strengthen and sustain, fostering meaningful transformation for self and others.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How Do I Know if Champions for Change is Right for Me?
Champions is for community builders, helpers, organizers, caregivers, and others who are deeply attentive to the wellbeing of their communities, even if they don’t yet see themselves as “leaders.” People come to CFC looking for growth, connection, and support in work that can feel heavy and isolating.
CFC is a space for discovery, development, and restoration. It nurtures your strengths while helping you uncover new capacities. Champions learn with curiosity and openness, building skills, relationships, and shared power across communities. The experience culminates in a rejuvenating retreat in Idlewild, a historic and energizing place of rest and renewal.
Champions must be 18 or older and live or work in Southeast Michigan. The program is open to all, regardless of citizenships.
How are Champions selected?
Applications for the 2026 Champions for Change cohort will open on November 1, 2025, at 9:00 AM and close on December 8, 2025, at 9:00 AM.
Applications will be submitted online via a link shared on this page. After reviewing each submission, our application team (composed of NEW staff, CFC facilitators, and CFC alum) will invite prospective Champions to a 20-minute virtual conversation.
Relationships are at the heart of Champions for Change, and we know that you are more than the words on a page. This conversation is your opportunity to connect with us, share your story, and reflect on what racial co-liberation means to you.
The most important part of your application is your personal commitment to advancing racial justice in Southeast Michigan. To participate, you must also:
- Live or work in Southeast Michigan (open to all, regardless of citizenship)
- Be available to attend program sessions and complete pre-work
- Demonstrate openness to learning, readiness to engage, and the courage to be vulnerable
- Be prepared to grow both individually and collectively
- Be committed to deepening relationships within our community
In all of our Learning Communities, we prioritize diverse cohorts, centering voices historically excluded or marginalized by race, sexual orientation, ability, gender, age, and more. Your identity matters – not as a checkbox, but as part of creating inclusive leadership.
How Much Does It Cost?
We offer a tiered fee structure to honor everyone’s unique financial situation. Your ability to pay won’t affect your application.
The true cost per person is $5,000, but thanks to NEW’s subsidies, you can choose a fee of $3,000, $2,000, $1,000, or another amount that fits your budget. Your payment supports facilitators, materials, and meals, helping us keep the program high-quality and accessible.
We encourage applicants to seek organizational sponsorship, and if sponsored, you’ll indicate the fee that works best for your organization. If you’re self-funding, reflect on your finances using the ‘Green Bottle Framework’ and select the fee in the application that fits your situation.
