Today's technological innovations are creating virtual and instant volunteer opportunities (see lead story), but of course traditional means of helping out will always be appreciated! We can all make excellent use of volunteers and keep them engaged if we invest our time in preparation ( job descriptions, adequate training) and appreciation (incentives and rewards). The Changing Face of Volunteerism

If we start thinking about volunteer opportunities in terms of what and when is convenient for our supporters instead of the other way around, we'll be able to engage many more people, affect more lives, and work more closely with our communities than we've ever been able to in the past.
Would you consider crowdsourcing a data management project that requires less than a minute of someone's time to be a volunteering opportunity? Or reviewing a single paragraph of a resume for mistakes? How about showing up for the equivalent of a flash mob for advocacy, in response to an Short Message Service nudging 5,000 people to show up somewhere?
Traditionally, the nonprofit sector might not consider these to be volunteer opportunities or even offer them as options to supporters. But with changing technology and the new ways to leverage the power of the internet, the nonprofit sector would be missing out if we didn't take advantage of these new approaches. Here are some suggested tools to tap into:

NGen Fellows Program
If you are in the under-40 age group, you are invited to apply for the American Express NGen Fellows program, which aims to build the capacity of young professionals to shape the future of the nonprofit community. Its sophisticated programming, anchored by the Independent Sector's 2009 Conference, will offer six months of online and in-person activities that will help hone fellows' leadership skills and strengthen their professional networks. Just 12 people from IS member organizations will be selected. Visit the program's website for more information. Applications due August 14.
Free Market Research Services
Perspectives Consulting Group, Inc. has experienced first-hand how market research can enable a nonprofit organization to meet its goals and deliver quality services to the community. Their Nonprofit Research Assistance Program will donate $5,000 in market research services to a nonprofit organization that serves southeast Michigan and the same to a nonprofit serving southwest Michigan. Criteria for applying:

have been unable to conduct research due to limited resources or lack of expertise

total revenue of less than $500,000, or if government or grant funded, have unrestricted funds of less than 10% of their total operating budget.

Independent Sector Annual Conference
November 4-6 | Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center
Challenging Times, New Opportunities is the theme of this year's Independent Sector conference, presented in partnership with the Michigan Council of Foundations. Take advantage of the Detroit location and plan to attend. Early bird registration deadline is July 31. Add your voice to three days of transformative exchanges among leaders from across the nonprofit community.
Also at the conference: The NGen: Moving Nonprofit Leaders from Next to Now invites emerging leaders under age 40 to a develop their leadership skills and networks.
